The Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) is a program within the Aspen Institute. ANDE is a global membership network of organizations that propel entrepreneurship in emerging markets. ANDE members provide critical financial, educational, and business support services to small and growing businesses (SGBs) based on the conviction that SGBs will create jobs, stimulate long-term economic growth, and produce environmental and social benefits. Ultimately, we believe that SGBs can help lift countries out of poverty. Launched with 34 members in 2009, ANDE now comprises over 290 members who collectively operate in more than 150 countries.

ANDE is looking for a Finance Associate, based in our Washington, DC office.

Position Description

The Finance Associate will report to the Finance Director and is responsible for leading all aspects of ANDE regional chapter financial management. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated knowledge of general accounting and finance practices, excellent interpersonal skills with and a proactive work style. The successful candidate will be a self-starter, motivated, organized, and have a proven track record with taking initiative and completing tasks on time.

Role Focus

The primary role of the Finance Associate will be to oversee financial management of ANDE’s eight regional chapters, which are offices based in emerging markets in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Specifically, the Associate will:

  • Review excel-based quarterly regional chapter financial reporting templates (resolving accounting discrepancies, reviewing bank account reconciliations, and ensuring grant compliance)
  • Oversee chapter yearly budgeting process and assists with forecasting and cashflow projections
  • Ensure regional chapter expenditures are within established budget parameters
  • Oversee chapter grant financial reporting and monitors grant spending
  • Track the transfer of funds between the headquarters office and chapters
  • Manage labor allocations for all chapters as well as assist with program wide allocations
  • Assist with proposal costing and ad hoc financial analysis
  • Assist with headquarter grant and department reporting

Role Experience

The ideal candidate for this position will have:

  •  4-6 years of experience in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related field
  •  Technical experience with grant award accounting issues
  •  Non-profit or donor-funded accounting experience
  •  Experience with government regulations related to grants and contracts
  •  Strong Microsoft Excel skills
  •  Experience in manipulating, analyzing and interpreting data and communicating results to non-finance personnel
  •  Strong verbal and written communication skills, including ability to explain financial and accounting terms to laymen/women
  •  Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  •  Experience working with in multi-currency international programs
  •  Multi-lingual skills and/or multi-cultural experience appreciated
